Mutharika wins Malawi presidential vote
Malawi's electoral commission declares incumbent president Bingu wa Mutharika the winner of Tuesday's election, with more than 90 percent of votes counted.
The commission's chairwoman Anastansia Msosa made the announcement just before midnight Thursday GMT. With 93.25 percent of ballots counted Mutharika won 2,730,630 votes to challenger John Tembo's 1,270,057, she said.
Mutharika, a 75-year-old former World Bank official, is credited with bringing economic gains to the southern African nation of 12 million.
Earlier Thursday, Tembo had alleged there had been vote-rigging. Msosa said the commission is investigating.
