Blasts rock Tanzania after military base accident
DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – Explosions rocked the night sky in Tanzania's capital Wednesday after an accident at a military base ammunition dump near the airport, officials said
Military spokesman Lt. Col. Kapambala Mgawe, said casualties were possible but officials would not know until Thursday. The explosions happened over several hours at the Gongo la Mboto military base in Dar es Salaam.
The road to the base was closed. Britain's Foreign Office sent out a travel warning saying it believed the nearby international airport had also been closed.
The advisory said the explosions rained debris across the city. Residents were advised to stay indoors and away from windows.
Residents reported loud booms that shook buildings over several hours. Photos sent to social networking sites showed huge orange explosions lighting up the sky.
"Of course there might be injuries and deaths but it's not yet confirmed," Mgawe said. "We are not allowed to go closer and, of course, the road to Gongo la Mboto has been closed."
James Kruuse, a resident of the capital, said explosions rattled the building he was in, which is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the base.
There were "plenty, plenty of explosions, and we felt them far away," he said.
Explosions at the base's ammunition depot in spring 2009 killed more than a dozen people.
